The Brookhaven police officer who initially reported his car hijacked on Raymond Road in Jackson was arrested last week on arson charges after officers later found his car burned and abandoned. 

Jackson Fire Department Division Chief Cleotha Sanders said they were able to arrest and charge Jairus Davis of the Brookhaven Police Department with the crime of arson. Davis called in a report that he had stopped his car on the side of the road to check on a car problem when his vehicle was hijacked. Sanders said Davis’s car was later found at 926 Valencia St.

He said the arrest was based on information received from the investigation, interviews and surveillance footage of businesses that Davis said he had stopped at that night. Some of the footage conflicted with the information Davis provided.

Brookhaven Police Department Chief Bobby Bell said that he has not spoken with Davis about the situation and said that Davis turned in his resignation on April 7 citing the reason as to address personal matters. Now that Davis has these charges Bell said that he can no longer work for the department.

“He’s a young officer and I wish him the best,” Bell said. “But it’s a bad reflection on my department.”
