Lincoln Co. to get new public bus

Traveling around Brookhaven and Lincoln County may been getting a little easier for residents. Five County Community Transportation, in association with Five County Child Development, held a public hearing Thursday, Feb. 5 to gauge the interest of county residents.

Trashunta Durr, office assistant at Five County Community Transportation said the public hearing was to inform citizens of the transportation options available to them and to gauge interest for a second bus.

She said the hearing, held at the Lincoln County Public Library went well and that inquiries about transportation services since the hearing.

She said that the organization already has one bus serving the Lincoln County area with between 15 and 20 residents being transported each day. The organization also has one bus in Lawrence, Jefferson Davis, Covington and Pike counties. They also have a presence in Marion and Lamar Counties on demand.

Durr said Lincoln County’s current bus runs from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Residents must call 24 hours in advance to be picked up. The bus has multiple routes: an employment route that transports individuals from home to work and back home, a dialysis route that transports people to the dialysis center in Brookhaven, and a general public route which includes an education route transporting students to Brookhaven High School and Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Wesson.

Cost to use the public transportation system is $5 for a round-trip per day. The service can be reached by calling 601-792-4196 or 1-800-670-7178.

Durr said since the hearing, service has picked up slightly in the county and actions to obtain a second bus are already in process. She said she can’t say for sure when there’ll be two buses in Lincoln County but it’ll be very soon.
