Wesson defeats Jefferson Co. and Dexter, Lady Cobras lose twice

The Wesson Cobras played their first divisional game of the season in Fayette Friday night as the Cobras earned a split against the Jefferson County Tigers.
In the girls’ game, the Lady Cobras played in a close game but lost to the Lady Tigers with a final score of 49-53.
In boys action, the Cobras boys outplayed the Tigers to claim a 66-63 victory.
In Saturday afternoon action, the Cobras hosted the Dexter Bulldogs.
The Lady Cobras suffered a tough lost to the Lady Bulldogs 36-45. The Cobras beat the Bulldogs in a blowout win with a final score of 75-53.
The Cobras will travel to Puckett Tuesday for more basketball action. JV action starts at 5 p.m. The varsity teams begin play at 6 p.m. for the girls, and the boys play at 7:30 in Puckett.
Jefferson County 53, Wesson 49
The Lady Cobras fell to the Lady Tigers with a 49-53 loss Friday night in the first divisional game of the season.
Sophomore Aurianna Vaughn was the top scorer for the Lady Cobras with a point total of 18. Other top scorers for Wesson were Carnesha Green with 10 points and Tashay Glasper with nine points. The Lady Cobras were 6/14 in free throw action.
Jefferson County’s Antrell Gates scored 23 points, and Rachel Shelvy scored 13 points. The Lady Tigers were 8/16 in free throw action.
Wesson 66, Jefferson County 63
The Wesson Cobras started off their first division game with a big win against the Jefferson County Tigers with a 66-63 win Friday night. Anthony Jones, Cobra junior, led the night with 26 points. Senior Dartavious Dixon was also a top scorer with 18 points. The Cobras were 21/29 in free throws.
The Tigers top player was TiJuan Cameron with 17 points. Other top scorers for Jefferson County were Josh Day with 15 points and Christan Day with 13 points. The Tigers had an average of 15/29 in free throw action.
Dexter 45, Wesson 36
The Lady Cobras’ luck didn’t change with another loss to Dexter Saturday afternoon with a final score of 36-45.
Junior Jashia Smith led the offense and defense with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore Aurianna Vaughn was another top scorer for the Lady Cobras with a seven points and seven rebounds. The Lady Cobras were 8/14 in free throw action.
Dexter’s Nequivia Hargrove scored 23 points and Kelronisha Jefferson scored eight points and was top defender with 11 rebounds. The Lady Bulldogs were 9/20 in free throw action.
“We need to play better and learn to keep our composure,” Wesson Coach Rusty Newman. “We are making too many minimal mistakes late in the game which keeps us from winning these games.”
Wesson 75, Dexter 53
The Wesson Cobras won big in Saturday afternoon action against the Dexter Bulldogs with a final score of 75-53.
Wesson’s junior forward Anthony Jones scored 25 points and had six rebounds and four steals. Other top scorers for Wesson were senior Dartavious Dixon with 15 points, three rebounds, three steals and one assist, sophomore Eric Rhymes with 12 points, four rebounds, two steals and one assist, and sophomore Will Hulon with 11 points. Rhymes and Hulon were 100 percent from the free throw line. The Cobras were 16/26 in free throws.
The Bulldogs’ top player was Terion Bell with 11 points and five rebounds. The Bulldogs had an average of 7/15 in free throw action.
“The guys play a lot better when we play with intensity,” Newman said. “We need to keep up this type of play as we start playing our district games.”
