TERRY – The Brookhaven Panthers and Terry Lady Bulldogs notched non-divisional wins Thursday night into the Terry High Gymnasium. The Lady Bulldogs took advantage of numerous Brookhaven turnovers; to the tune of a 48-25 win over the Lady Panthers.

After a sluggish opening stanza, the Panthers literally turned up the heat on defense in the second quarter. The result authored a come-from-behind 61-55 win over the Bulldogs.

Due to renovations inside Sinclair Gymnasium, Brookhaven continues their road tour next Tuesday at South Pike.

Terry 48, Brookhaven 25 

Neither team could get a spark going, despite the freezing temperatures outside. Both teams shot below 30 percent from the floor. It would the Lady Bulldog’s advantage in scoring in the paint (24-8), points off Brookhaven turnovers (24-8 on 26 Ole Brook miscues and a 22-9 edge in second-chance putbacks.

“We just could not get anything going on either end of the floor,” said Lady Panther head coach Freda Craft, whose ballclub feel to 0-3. “Too many turnovers.”

Shoniece Smith paced Craft’s crew with 6 points, 2 steals and 2 assists. Asia Byrd and Yasmine Hill had 3 steals apiece. Brookhaven was on the wrong end of a 50-25 rebounding edge by Terry.

Terry (3-0), coached by Tiffany Porter, was led by Takayla Tassin with 12 points. Dandy Dozen guard Nyah Tate was held to 4 points.

Brookhaven 61, Terry 55 

The Bulldogs (2-2), coached by Matthew Scott, opened the game with a jet-quick 14-2 run. After a quick time-out by Brookhaven head coach Preston Wilson, the Panthers (2-1) were able to recover. It was not until an offensive putback by Tavis Moore that Ole Brook recognized its initial lead of the game – 50-48 nearing the midway point of the final stanza.

“We switched to a man-defense to help create some turnovers,” said Wilson.

Like in the girls game, neither boys team could shoot the ball with any consistency. Both Brookhaven and Terry hovered around the 36-percent mark from the floor. The Bulldogs had 16 of their game-high 22 turnovers, once the Panthers began using their press defense.

Moore led all scorers with 14 points, followed by Tyriq Reese with 12 and Shon Blackwell with 10. Moore had 8 rebounds. Blackwell and Demarius Brooks each dished out 3 assists.

KJ Taylor and Jaylon Kendrick scored 12 points apiece.

In the JV Boys game, Tyriq Reese tossed in a game-high 31 points, followed by Marte Jones with 11.

Terry got 16 points from Timothy Lacey and 10 points from Datavian Porter.
