WESSON- The Wesson Cobras hosted the Jefferson County Tigers Friday night and gained another big win in district action and to up their record to 2-1 as Wesson claimed a 33-16 victory over the Tigers.

“I was very proud of our team’s effort. Jefferson County came into the game undefeated in our region and our guys battled the whole game,” said head coach Ronald Greer for the Cobras. “We took a step forward in our goal of making the playoffs and being in the hunt for the region title. We need to have a great week of practice in preparation for a very good Franklin County team next week.”

The first quarter began with the Tigers receiving but unable to move down the field due to the Cobras’ tough defensive team that included Jeremiah Stapleton, Kendrick Brown, Bobby Pritchard and Timothy Craft who stopped them at the 12 yard line.

The Cobras took over after Jefferson County’s unsuccessful 4th down attempt and held the ball for the remainder of the quarter with seven first downs. Jermaine James scored with 0:00 on the clock and Tre Fleming made the extra point bringing the score to 7-0 Cobras at the end of the first quarter.

The Cobras scored early in the second quarter when Dartavious Dixon made a 60-yard touchdown and Fleming going 2-2 for extra points. The Tigers next attempt was shortened when they lost the ball to Farrod Green on a fumble.

Jefferson County battled back on their next possession when wide receiver James Herrington, Jr. caught the ball making a 36-yard play to the end zone. The two-point conversion by Arthur Norton added 8 points on the scoreboard for Jefferson County. The Tigers made it to the red zone again right before halftime, but their attempt was halted when Arthur Harris sacked quarterback Rasahard Brown on the fourth down as the Cobras held the 14-8 lead going into halftime.

Wesson came out strong after halftime as Farrod Green sprinting 79 yards to paydirt on a kickoff return to extend their lead on the scoreboard with 11:44 on the clock.

The Cobra defense held the Tigers and gained possession of the ball from the Tigers’ next two possessions with interceptions by Timothy Craft and Jeremiah Stapleton.

Wesson’s luck would change on the next play with a fumble that was recovered by Tiger Arthur Norton. Norton ran it 10 yards into the end zone for a touchdown.

Rasahard Brown added two points with a quarterback keeper bringing the score to 20-16 with the Cobras in the lead at the end of the 3rd quarter.

The Cobras owned the fourth quarter by adding two more touchdowns. Farrod Green completed a 36-yard pass in the end zone and Michael Hauer also rushed to the end zone after the Cobras gained possession on a fumble recovery by Jeremiah Stapleton.

The game ended with the Cobras in control and letting the time run out with a final score of 33-16 adding another district win for Wesson.

Offensively, Wesson finished with 45 rushes for 251 yards. Tyler Christmas was 2 for 8 in passing for 44 yards totaling 267 total yards of offense. Leading rushers were Michael Hauer, with 12 rushes for 87 yards, and Dartavious Dixon, with 2 carries for 67 yards. In passing, Farrod Green had a 36-yard touchdown catch and a 79 yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

Defensively, the leading tacklers were Kendrick Brown, with 11 tackles, and Jamarcus Patterson, with five tackles. Arthur Harris and Enrique Smith had four tackles each. Timothy Craft and Jeremiah Stapleton each had an interception and Farrod Green had a fumble recovery.

Wesson travels to Meadville to take on the Franklin County Bulldogs this Friday for a huge district contest. Game time is 7 p.m.
