War Eagles clobber Ole Brook

The Wayne County War Eagles used their speed on offense and defense to overwhelm the Brookhaven Panthers 43-7 Friday night in Region 3-5A action on King Field.
“We got beat by a really good team,” said BHS coach Tommy Clopton. “Our guys came out and played hard against a very good skilled athletic team. Now, we must put this lost behind us and start preparing for another tough region next week against West Jones.”
In the first quarter, Wayne County and Brookhaven’s defense put on a great show for the fans in the opening series as neither school’s offense could advance the ball.
Wayne County’s offense managed to break through Ole Brook’s defense late in the first quarter and punch in a 2-yard touchdown run with 3:15 left.
The War Eagles added to their lead with :42 seconds remaining when Branden McCary kicked a 38-yard field goal. McCary finished the night kicking four of six extra-point attempts for Wayne County.
In the second quarter, the War Eagles offense managed to break through BHS defense once again and add another score to their lead on a nine-yard run from Decarlos Walker with 0:17. Wayne County led at halftime 16-0.
In the second half, Wayne County continued to overpowered Brookhaven and increased their lead by 14 points. Jamal Powe cashed in a 2-yard touchdown run, and Walker punched in his second touchdown on a 24-yard sprint.
The Panther did manage to break up Wayne County’s bid of a shutout late in the third quarter, when Jon-Mark Mathis connected with Shaquan Richardson for an 11-yard touchdown pass. Tyler Mixon was successful on the extra-point attempt.
In the final quarter, Wayne County continued to punish Ole Brook on the scoreboard as they increase their lead by two more touchdowns. Schdarius Chambers would score both touchdowns on runs of 3 and 72 yards.
Offensively, Chris Cooley powered the War Eagles ground attack with 28 rushes for 182 yards. Chambers contributed 96 yards on nine carries. Walker rushed six times for 58 yards.
Ken Boyd was the top rusher for Ole Brook with 14 carries for 59 yards. Tre McDaniel had 18 rushes for 53 yards.
Mathis completed four of 10 passes for 64 yards and ran for 10 yards on seven carries. Richardson led all receivers with two catches for 49 yards.
Defensively, Leo Lewis powered Brookhaven with nine tackles. Ben Robinson contributed eight tackles.
Ole Brook (3-3, 0-1) travels to take on the West Jones Mustangs next Friday. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
