More than 50 high school students recently visited Grand Gulf Nuclear Station to learn about the opportunities the nuclear industry provides and to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Grand Gulf Nuclear Station.

“We love to host students at Grand Gulf,” said Brad Kapellas, Grand Gulf site vice president. “Getting local students excited about the opportunities in nuclear is what will keep Grand Gulf running for the long haul.”

Students from Brookhaven Home School and Lawrence County Technology and Career Center visited the plant and got to learn about nuclear power and do hands-on activities related to career opportunities within the nuclear field.

Students learned how electricity worked by making various snap circuits, dressed out in protective clothing with radiation protection, learned what it was like to be an operator in the control room simulator, and how and instrumentation and controls technician monitors and fixes equipment.

“Students were inquisitive and asked a bunch of good questions,” said volunteer Billy Newman. “By the end of the day it looks like we recruited a lot of future engineers and operators.”

Grand Gulf Nuclear Station is celebrating 40 years of producing clean, carbon-free electricity for its customers and communities this year. Entergy is committed to teaching the next generation of nuclear workers.
