Severe storms threaten southwest Mississippi Sunday

BROOKHAVEN — National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for Lincoln, Franklin, Lawrence and Copiah Counties and much of Mississippi until 9 pm. The watch is part of severe weather forecast this afternoon.
A week after 28 tornadoes, and possibly more, roared through Mississippi another round of severe weather is in the forecast. National Weather Service in Jackson warns there is increased risk of strong winds, hail and tornadoes for southwest Mississippi.
The timing of these storms are currently forecast to be between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. Sunday for most of Franklin, Lincoln, Copiah and Lawrence Counties.
The northwestern panhandle of Lincoln County, most of Franklin and Copiah Counties are expected to see an enhanced risk of severe storms with damaging wind gusts reaching 70 mph, a few tornadoes are expected and hail will be up to a quarter in size Sunday. The rest of Lincoln County and Lawrence County have a slight risk of severe storms Sunday with damaging wind gusts expected to reach 60 mph, tornadoes are possible and hail will be up to quarter size.
Throughout the day Sunday there will be strong winds which could bring down trees and power lines. Sustained wind speeds are forecast to reach 25 to 30 mph with gusts reaching 40 to 50 mph. The strong winds can be expected between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. Sunday.
From Sunday night to Friday night, low temperatures are forecast to drop below freezing. High temperatures will be in the 40s.
