What offices are up for election in 2025?

The new year begins with qualifying for municipal offices on the first business day of 2025, Thursday, Jan. 2.

It is the first day candidates may file petitions and/or qualifying statements, and pay qualifying fees for municipal offices. The final day for qualifying is Friday, Jan. 31.

Up for election in Brookhaven are the offices of mayor, and all seats on the Board of Aldermen.

As determined by final actions of the Board and Mayor Joe Cox, the Chief of Police position is now an appointed, rather than elected, one.

Current office holders in electable positions are:

Mayor Joe C. Cox, second term

Alderman-at-Large Don Underwood, first term

Ward 1 Alderman James Magee Jr., first term

Ward 2 Alderman Shannon Moore, second term

Ward 3 Alderman Rev. Charles J. Caston Sr., first term

Ward 4 Alderman Jeff Henning, first term

Ward 5 Alderman Fletcher Grice, third term

Ward 6 Alderman Andre’ Spiller, first term

 

More important election dates for 2025:

Feb. 18 — Earliest day to vote by absentee ballot in the City Clerk’s Office for the Primary Election.

March 3 — Final day to register in-person to vote in the Municipal Primary Elections; final day for mail-in registration applications to be postmarked.

March 29 — Final day for in-person absentee voting, 12 noon deadline.

April 1 — Primary Election Day, polls open 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.

April 22 — Primary Runoff Election Day, polls open 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.

June 3 — General Election Day, polls open 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Independent candidates will be on this ballot, not on the Primary ballot.

July 1 — Municipal officers’ terms begin.
