BROOKHAVEN — It took 28 seconds, a couple of passes and Brookhaven High School was up 1-0 over Natchez. Brookhaven beat the Natchez boys team 9-0 in just 50 minutes of action Thursday night.
The Natchez girls forfeited their contest against the Ole Brook girls and did not play. Brookhaven pieced together great passing, ball control and positioning to pick apart an athletic Natchez defense.
Senior Bram Wolfe scored the first goal 28 seconds in. A pass across a stranded Natchez goalkeeper fell to his feet and he finished off the movement. Head Coach Aaron Ayers remarked it was a new team record for fastest goal on the sideline.
“It kind of set the tone for how we want to come out and play and win soccer games,” Wolfe said. “We know if we can’t out run a team we have to pass better and that helped with how accurately we passed the ball. I think we did pretty good passing tonight.”’
Ethen Lopez scored the second goal of the match six minutes in on a low shot. Crews Stewart cannoned a shot from a corner kick into the roof of the net to take a 3-0 lead with 28 minutes left in the first half.
Five minutes later, Jak Gonzalez put his laces through the ball and found the top corner of the far post to take a 4-0 lead. Natchez’s goalkeeper had no chance of saving the shot.
Baylor Brister slotted home an easy shot to take a 5-0 lead with 19 minutes left in the first half. Markham Williams finished off a counter attack two minutes later to give the Panthers a 6-0 lead. Brister scored again on a tap in about three minutes later to go up 7-0. Lopez added another goal late in the first half to lead 8-0 at halftime.
Fisher Sones scored the final goal of the game on a penalty kick to go up 9-0. Under the MHSAA mercy rule the match ended minutes later at the 50th minute mark.
Ayers told the team after the game they would play Natchez in the first game back from winter break at Natchez. The match will be played on January 7th. Ayers told the squad they have to win out in the second half of the season. It will be the last stretch of games for Wolfe’s career at Ole Brook. He has played soccer since fifth grade.
“It is a lot more fun playing as a senior but there is more pressure too. You are the oldest so people have higher standards for you,” Wolfe said. “I believe we can win out. We really have to be more physical and in the right mental state. Soccer has been a part of my life. I’ll miss it a good bit. It is a part of my life and I’ll miss it a lot.”
He said after graduation he plans to attend Mississippi State and major in electrical engineering or construction science.
“I just like the engineering side of things. That is what I’ve learned in high school,” Wolfe said. “I was in polymer science and higher math classes.”
