BROOKHAVEN — Dreaming of a White Christmas might be the only way snow falls on the holiday in southwest Mississippi. According to the National Weather Service, the normal amount of snow recorded on Christmas day is 0.1 inches.
Oftentimes, temperatures don’t get below freezing to allow for snow to occur on Christmas Day. NWS Jackson reports the average temperature for Christmas day is 47.5 degrees with a normal high of 59 and a normal low of 38.
It should be noted the NWS Jackson snowfall records only go as far back as 1896 and snow depth records go back to 1963. It isn’t just Christmas that typically does not see snow, NWS Jackson reports the first 25 days of December see an average of 0.5 inches of snowfall. In 1929, eight inches of snow fell in the first 25 days of December with 7.5 of those inches coming on Dec. 22.
The snowiest winter on record was Nov. 1903 to April 1904 with 11.7 inches of snowfall recorded. NWS Jackson’s data indicate snowfall is a rare treat for southwest Mississippi
