Flash flooding could come to Southwest Mississippi early next week

BROOKHAVEN — Flash flooding could threaten southwest Mississippi later this weekend and early next week according to the National Weather Service. Lincoln County is forecast to receive substantial rainfall.

NWS Jackson warns there could be two to four inches of rain in a short amount of time Sunday and Monday which could lead to localized areas of flash flooding especially in low lying, urban areas. The heavy rain could occur Sunday evening through Monday night.

Rain chances will start Saturday night after a partly sunny day. NWS Jackson forecasts a 30 percent chance of rain Saturday. Sunday has a 60 percent chance of rain during the day which jumps up to 90 percent Sunday night. Monday and Monday night have a 70 percent chance of rain.

Tuesday has a 50 percent chance of rain followed by 30 percent chance of rain Tuesday night.

The rain chances come at a crucial time. A little over half of Lincoln County remains in abnormally dry conditions according to the National Drought Monitor. Some parts of Lincoln and Franklin Counties need between 2 to three inches of rain to get back to normal soil moisture levels.

Forecasted wildfire danger ratings are moderate today and forecast to be moderate Saturday.
