Brookhaven High alum Angel “Cookie” Wilkinson has been on a tear to start the 2024-2025 basketball season at Copiah-Lincoln Community College.
Wilkinson is averaging 18.6 points per game for CLCC and head coach Dr. Britta Stephens. Earlier this week, Wilkinson was named Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) Player of the Week.
The honor came after a week when Wilkinson averaged 27 points, seven steals, six assists, and four rebounds per game as CLCC went 1-1 with a loss to Holmes and a win over Delgado.
The 31-point performance against Delgado for Wilkinson was a career high, as she was one steal away from a triple double, finishing with nine steals and 10 assists in a 101-69 win.
“Cookie Wilkinson is playing outstanding for us right now,” said Stephens in a release by the school announcing the honor. “Not only is she leading us in scoring, but she is also leading us in steals and is consistently one of our top rebounders and assists getters. Night in and night out, she makes our team better by doing the little things. As one of our only sophomores, she has been a great leader for us all fall and has worked very hard to teach and encourage our freshmen. I am very excited for Cookie to receive this honor. She puts in countless hours of extra work and is very deserving of this honor.”
Wilkinson was named Daily Leader All-Area MVP as a junior at BHS for coach Preston Wilson. She was not the only Wolf to be honored last week, as men’s basketball player Deven Bates helped CLCC sweep the Player of the Week honor with his selection.
A freshman who prepped at Hillcrest Christian in Jackson, Bates averaged 24 points per game for head coach David Sanders and Co-Lin during a 2-0 week.
The Co-Lin women are 6-3 overall and riding a four-game winning streak. Stephen’s squad pulled out a pair of close wins last week at the Coca-Cola Classic hosted by Southwest Mississippi CC in Summit. Co-Lin first beat LSU-Eunice 71-69 and then topped Southern University-Shreveport 62-57.
Sanders and the Co-Lin men are 4-4 overall.
The next home game for Co-Lin will be on Saturday, Dec. 7 against Southern-Shreveport. On that day, the CLCC men will play first at 12 p.m. and be followed by the Co-Lin women playing at 2 p.m.
