Chance of severe storms tonight

BROOKHAVEN — The National Weather Service warns of a chance for severe storms in Lincoln County and much of southwest and central Mississippi Monday night. Additionally, strong winds could be possible throughout the day starting around 10 a.m.

Isolated severe storms could be possible for the area as a cold front moves through the region. Damaging wind gusts are the biggest concern with this system although a brief tornado or two can not be ruled out according to the NWS.

Timing wise, the storms could reach Lincoln County between 11 p.m. Monday night and 3 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Strong winds could also be possible throughout today with sustained wind speeds of 20 to 25 mph and gusts reaching 30 to 40 mph. Winds could cause weakened trees and limbs to break and fall. Felled trees could cause downed powerlines and spark subsequent wildfires.

High profile vehicles could become unstable in high winds so be cautious while driving. Strong winds could be between 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

In addition to weather threats, Lincoln County has a 90 percent chance of rain tonight and could see between one to two inches of rain.
