A Pike County man is dead after a collision with a Louisiana man fleeing from police.
On Wednesday, Aug. 28, two McComb Police officers spotted a man suspected of shoplifting from Walmart. The suspect — Steven Butler of Kentwood, Louisiana — was seen in a 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe parked behind a home, and fled in the vehicle when the officers approached on foot.
Butler’s car struck a vehicle sitting on blocks, which spun and hit one officer in the knee. That officer was treated at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center and released in good condition.
An MPD lieutenant then spotted the vehicle near Lynn Street in McComb, and pursued it for less than one minute before losing sight of him near the intersection of Broadway Street and Presley Boulevard.
Approximately 30 minutes later, around 5:49 p.m., a 2005 Chevrolet Suburban — driven by 34-year-old Derrick Magee of McComb — was traveling east on Hwy. 24 in Amite County with it collided with the Tahoe driven by Butler, who was traveling west. Magee suffered fatal injuries from the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
Butler was arrested and faces charges of aggravated assault on a police officer, felony fleeing, and multiple traffic violations. MHP is investigating the crash.
