BROOKHAVEN — Freshman forward Camille Calcote started playing soccer when she was three-years-old. She is now one of the key pieces in Brookhaven Academy’s starting lineup and was one of five players to score against Copiah Academy in a 10-0 win Tuesday night.

The MAIS mercy rule is eight goals after 60 minutes meaning teams can score more than eight goals before the 20 minute mark in the second half.

Junior Kendra Quinn opened the scoring with a goal four minutes into the game. She had three shots in the first four minutes. A minute later she found the back of the net again for her second goal in four shots.

Junior Karen Hernandez scored Brookhaven Academy’s third goal 12 minutes into the first half on a long curling shot. Calcote scored the fourth goal of the game in a collision with Copiah Academy’s goalkeeper. BA led 4-0 over Copiah Academy 20 minutes into the first half.

“It was good. I like the satisfaction of scoring but I also like to see good passes leading up to a goal,” Calcote said. “We saw good build up today. I just like the thought we had connecting passes. It makes the goal even better, it’s like we deserved the goal.”

Brookhaven Academy had an easy time passing the ball around and taking shots at Copiah’s goal. Quinn scored the fifth goal of the game on a long distance shot which went off of the keeper’s hand into the roof of the goal. Four minutes later, Quinn scored again to make it 6-0.

Junior Mary Anson Tate scored to make it 7-0 with five minutes left in the first half. Sophomore Livi Fortenberry ended the first half scoring with Brookhaven Academy’s eighth goal two minutes later.

Fortenberry scored again in the second half to make it 9-0. Copiah Academy had to play an additional 10 minutes. In those 10 minutes, Copiah Academy won a penalty kick and took their only shot of the game which was blazed over the crossbar.

Right before the 60th minute mark, Miranda Brister scored the 10th and final goal of the match. Brister is a sophomore who got some valuable playing time in the match.

Brookhaven Academy will face Cathedral Thursday evening to kick off their district schedule. BA is 6-4-2 to start off the season. The Cougars will play Adams County Christian School, Parklane Academy and Oak Forest Academy in district play.

“I’m excited. I hope we do well,” Calcote said. “We have all gotten better with chemistry. We have learned how to read body language. We know how people shoot and pass and we know what is coming most of the time.”

Calcote usually plays striker but showed she could play on the wing if needed. This season, she has spent more time training in the striker position. Her goal Tuesday set a personal record for a season with 12 goals, she hopes to score 20 goals this season.

Kickoff against Cathedral is 5:30 p.m.
