Here’s a recap of high school baseball playoff action from Friday for local MHSAA programs.

Enterprise 20, Simmons 0

The Enterprise Yellow Jackets (19-11) are on to the quarterfinals of the MHSAA 1A playoffs after finishing up a dominating sweep of the Simmons Blue Devils. EAC won at home 14-0 on Thursday and then traveled to Hollandale on Friday for a 20-0 win in three innings.

Enterprise got 10 hits, walked 14 times, and got two batters on after being hit by a pitch.

In the extra base department for the Jackets, Haygan Floyd hit a triple and Nick Harris and Tre Vining had a double each.

Pitcher Cole Jordan allowed a single hit while striking out eight of the 11 batters he faced.

Jordan also drove in three runs as did Parker Harris. Floyd had two RBIs as did Vining. Prewitt “Big Rig” Falvey and Ryder Martin each drove in a run as well. The Jackets did not have a batter strikeout in game two.

The Yellow Jackets will play either Taylorsville (17-10) or Nanih Waiya (16-8) in the 1A quarters. Taylorsville won game one of that series 8-1 on Friday.

St. Andrew’s 2, Bogue Chitto 1

The host St. Andrew’s Episcopal Saints scored two runs with two-outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn a walk-off win that was heartbreaking for fans of Bogue Chitto (17-13).

The win gave the Saints a 1-0 lead in the series that will return to Bogue Chitto on Saturday at 7 p.m. for game two.

St. Andrew’s (25-5) beat the Bobcats twice in the regular season but found themselves trailing 1-0 with only one out left thanks to a strong pitching effort from sophomore Tripp McCaffrey. McCaffrey gave up three hits in just over six innings. He surrendered one earned run while walking five and striking out two.

After McCaffrey gave up one run, he was replaced on the hill by senior Easton Sartin.

The Bobcats got their lone run of the night in the top of the second inning. McCaffrey started that inning at the plate by reaching on a dropped third strike by the SAE catcher.

McCaffrey moved up a base on a groundout by Noah Magee. With two outs, designated hitter Warren Wallace hit an RBI double that scored courtesy runner Jayden Poole.

The double by Wallace was the lone hit of the night for the BC offense as St. Andrew’s starter Carter Everett struck out six and walked five in 6.2 innings of action. Stone Myrick recorded the final out for the Saints with a strikeout in the top of the seventh.

Stone High 8, Brookhaven High 3

The Brookhaven High Panthers (15-10-1) didn’t play their best ball on Friday as Stone High used seven hits and seven errors by BHS to lead 8-0 through six innings of an eventual 8-3 win in the first game of the MHSAA 5A opening round in Wiggins.

Ole Brook starting pitcher Austin Rylee, a Jones College signee, struck out four and walked two in 4.1 innings. Rylee surrendered five hits and six runs, two of which were earned. Southwest Mississippi signee Elijah Calcote relieved Rylee, giving up two unearned runs on two hits while striking out four in 1.2 innings.

BHS head coach Matt White and his team will hope for better results on Saturday at 1 p.m. when the teams meet for game two on Moyer Field in Brookhaven.

Drew Nelson and DJ Washington each laced a double at the plate for the Panthers. Also hitting safely for BHS were Brayden Wilson, Luke Simmons, and Dreamus Harron Jr.

Nelson and Wilson had one RBI apiece.

Stone County (15-12) outhit the Panthers 7-5. The Tomcats from Stone are in their first year playing in the 5A ranks after four years spent as a 4A program. They finished second in Region 6-5A behind Vancleave (22-6).

Pisgah 18, Loyd Star 2

It’s jarring to see a team beat Loyd Star by such a large margin, but everything was going right for the Pisgah Dragons (24-7) on Friday at Loyd Star (22-7) in the first game of their MHSAA 2A second round playoff series and everything was going wrong for the Hornets.

Pisgah got 16 hits to score 18 runs, with eight of those runs coming in the top of the seventh inning. Loyd Star had more errors (six) than hits (two).

Expect a strong response from coach Jared Britt’s crew on Saturday when they travel to Sand Hill at 7 p.m. for a rematch with Pisgah in game two.

Senior Nathan Mills and junior Kayne Case had the two hits for Loyd Star, both doubles.

Riley Case, Eli Thornton, Caden Yarborough, Mason Smith and Graham Smith all made pitching appearances for the Hornets on the mound.

Mills and freshman Phillip Ross Spencer are two pitching options for Britt on the road Saturday as the goal is winning at Pisgah so the series can return to Monday for a deciding game.

 

Seminary 9, Wesson 4

Wesson (12-12) went ahead briefly by a 4-3 advantage on Friday in the top of the fifth inning of the MHSAA 3A second round playoff opener at Seminary High in Covington County.

The homestanding Bulldogs (17-10-1) scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth and then three more in the bottom of the sixth to get an eventual 9-4 win.

Wesson will hope to keep the series alive on Saturday when they host game two at 6 p.m.

Senior Preston Selman had two hits at the plate, one being a double, for Wesson coach Vance Windom. Also having one hit each for WAC were freshman Cooper Neely, freshman Wesley Loy, and freshman Blayten Windom. Neely had the lone RBI for Wesson.

Freshman starter Dawson Selman gave up six unearned runs on three hits in 4.2 innings as the Wesson defense committed three errors.

Layton Cloy and Tripp Martin saw time on the mound in relief. Seminary used five total pitchers in the win.
