JACKSON — Mississippi’s House of Representatives voted to share the love this Valentine’s Day by passing two bills recognizing Mississippi’s famous Musicians and the Tuskegee Airmen. At the conclusion of the votes, the house adjourned until 2 p.m. tomorrow. 

House Bill 365 would make March a month to celebrate Mississippi musicians as Mississippi is known as the “Birthplace of America’s music.” 

The bill would help “to recognize and celebrate the state’s rich musical heritage and to encourage the world to join Mississippi in honoring our musicians and their contributions.” 

The bill passed with 118 yes votes and moved on to the Senate. 

HB 124 would additionally designate the fourth Thursday of March as Tuskegee Airman day. The holiday would be a day to observe and recognize the courage and sacrifices the Tuskegee Airmen made for America. One representative said some of the Tuskegee Airmen were from Mississippi and served and lived upon returning from he conflict. The day is one way to honor them. 

Rep. Becky Currie was one of the co-authors of HB124. 

The bill passed with 121 yes votes and moved on to the Senate. 

Currie’s bill to create the Zeb Hughes Law remains on the Calendar and has not been called for vote and final passage out of the house.
