BROOKHAVEN — Mississippi Tobacco Free Coalition of Copiah and Lincoln Counties project director Falana McDaniel asked the board of supervisors to consider a tobacco free policy for the county. She appeared before the Lincoln County board during a regularly scheduled meeting Monday morning.

McDaniel told the board second hand smoke poses a danger to citizens in the county especially non-smokers. She said the Mississippi Department of Health reports Brookhaven has a smoke free comprehensive policy but Lincoln County does not.

“We would love for the county to adopt one,” McDaniel said.

Lincoln County Board Attorney Greg Malta asked how a new policy would be different from the county’s current smoke free policy at county owned buildings. He said the board would have to read more into the county’s current policy on smoking to determine if further action would need to be taken.

McDaniel said if the current policy is in fact comprehensive she would let the Mississippi Department of Health know. She said the department of health is working to ensure all cities and counties are smoke free.
