The city of Brookhaven’s Board of Aldermen and the city’s mayor approved approved the hiring of John Jones and Joseph Honea as CDL drivers and equipment operators. Pending drug tests and physicals, the men will work within the Solid Waste Department at salaries of $11.94 per hour.

The board approved the motions during a regularly scheduled March 1 board meeting.

They also approved the February 2022 salaried payrolls and the transfer of funds to cover the general fund of $ 458,340.18; water/sewer for $18,676.61; and solid waste for $796.16. 

The board approved the February 2022 weekly payrolls and the transfer of funds to cover the general fund for $70,027.32; water/sewer for $29,789.42; and solid waste for $26,408.92.

They approved placing a $5,000 Wal-Mart Grant into the Police Department’s equipment budget; approved a pay request (No. 5) from Greenbriar Digging Services in the amount of $386,757.02 for work completed on the West Meadowbrook Sewer Improvements Project, and transferred funds from W/S Reserve; and approved No. 6 pay request from Greenbriar Digging Services in the amount of $128,582.31 for work completed on the West Meadowbrook Sewer Improvements Project, and transferred the funds.

The board approved payment to Ross Jackson Plumbing in the amount of $6,233 for the re-plumbing of Fire Station No. 3 and revised carry-over CARES funds into the Fire Station Construction Fund.

They agreed for Fire Captain Aaron Welch to attend the Truck Company Operations Class at the State Fire Academy Feb. 27-March 3, 2022, and for the city to pay the registration cost of $365 and reimburse meals and mileage. The Fire Academy notified the fire chief about the class opening after the last board meeting, thus the reason the class is being approved while already in progress.

To avoid confusion for first responders due to there also being an Ellen Drive in town, the board approved, pursuant to MS Code 65-7-143(4), that the portion now known as Ellen Street, which intersects with Molly Road, is renamed Molly Road. The board also approved the closure of the portion of North First Street beginning at Industrial Park Road Northeast running north to North Park Lane as part of the AITX Expansion Project.

Board members approved accepting the lower quote from Greenbriar in the amount of $6,200 for the Field Lark Lane Water Extension. The other quote, received from Mitchell Contracting, numbered $8,000. The board accepted the lower quote from Greenbriar in the amount of $6,300 for the Oliver Drive Water Extension Project over the Mitchell Contracting at $8,600.

Street Supervisor Larry Sampson received accolades from aldermen concerning the ditch cleanup, while there was a short discussion about an ordinance regarding abandoned vehicles and mobile home parks that was tabled until the next meeting.
