Area High School Playoff Basketball Primer for Feb. 14

Here is a basketball primer for today’s area high school playoffs.
MHSAA 1A State Tournament
Enterprise at Taylorsville, 7 p.m. (Girls)
Coach Shane Adams and Enterprise (11-8) are the three seed out of Region 8-1A after beating Salem 54-29 in the consolation game. Taylorsville finished as runners-up in Region 7-1A after losing 55-35 to Bay Springs Friday. The winner of this game moves on to face the winner between McEvans and Ethel on Feb. 18
MHSAA 2A State Tournament
Collins at Loyd Star, 6 p.m. (Girls)
Coach Seth Britt and Loyd Star (12-12) are the no. 2 seed out of Region 7-2A after losing Thursday 51-12 to West Lincoln in the title game. Collins finished as the no. 3 seed out of Region 8-2A. The score of that game nor a current, accurate record are listed for Collins online. Scorebook Live has part of their schedule listed and has Collins with a 2-14 record thus far. The winner of this game moves on to face the winner between Lake and Pisgah on Feb. 18.
Stringer at West Lincoln, 6 p.m. (Girls)
Coach Alissa Adams and West Lincoln (17-8) are hosting an opening round playoff game in Jack Case Gymnasium for a fifth straight season after winning the Region 7-2A Tournament at Amite County last week. Stringer (11-17), from Jasper County, was upset in the consolation game of Region 8-2A by Collins. Stringer twice beat Collins in the regular season. The winner of this game moves on to face the winner between Kemper County and Pelahatchie on Feb. 18.
Bogue Chitto at Heidelberg, 6 p.m. (Girls)
Coach Marc Howard and Bogue Chitto (13-12) are the no. 3 seed from Region 7-2A after beating East Marion 47-41 in the consolation game on Friday. Heidelberg (14-10) lost 62-51 to North Forrest in the Region 8-2A championship game. North Forest (20-8) and Heidelberg had split their regular season matchups. The winner of this game moves on to face the winner between Puckett and Newton High on Feb. 18.
MHSAA 3A State Tournament
West Marion at Wesson, 7 p.m. (Girls)
Coach Michelle Nunnery and Wesson (17-9) are the no. 2 seed from Region 7-3A after losing 64-48 to Franklin County in the region championship on Friday. Port Gibson had beaten Wesson twice in the regular season, but Wesson won 60-53 when the teams played in the tournament semifinals last week. West Marion (16-10) beat St. Patrick Catholic 39-37 in the Region 8-3A consolation game. The teams met in the regular season with West Marion taking a 64-63 win on Dec. 30. The winner moves on to face the winner between Union High and Seminary on Feb. 18.
MHSAA 4A State Tournament
Lawrence County at Moss Point, 7 p.m. (Girls)
Coach Candice McDuffey and Lawrence County (14-10) are the no. 3 seed from Region 7-4A after beating Poplarville 48-29 in the consolation game. LC had been beaten 43-40 by Sumrall in the semifinals on Thursday. Moss Point (19-10) was beaten 26-25 by Pass Christian in the Region 8-4A title game. Moss Point lost in the 4A state championship last season and in 2020. The winner moves on to face the winner between Raymond and Mendenhall.
MHSAA 5A State Tournament
Hattiesburg at Brookhaven High, 7 p.m. (Girls)
Coach Preston Wilson and Brookhaven High (21-5) are the no. 2 seed from Region 5-5A after losing 37-33 at home Friday to West Jones. Hattiesburg (11-10) lost 65-32 to Laurel in the opening round of the Region 6-5A Tournament but bounced back to beat South Jones 49-29 in the consolation game. The winner moves on to face Pearl River Central on Feb. 18.
