West Lincoln’s Enrico Price and Wesson’s Chris Davis are The Daily Leader Players of the Week.

Price keeps WL playoff hopes moving with OPOW performance

If you were at the 2018 West Lincoln season opener at Mount Olive, then you saw a smallish freshman running back named Enrico “Red” Price join the 200-yard club for the first time.

Price carried the ball 15 times for 202 yards and two scores that night in a WL win.

This season, Price has topped 200 yards rushing in a game twice, including 201 yards on 22 carries for a pair of touchdowns Friday in a 28-26 win over Loyd Star. For his efforts, Price has been named the Daily Leader Offensive Player of the Week.

Price is just 80 yards away from going over 1,000 for this season, which would make it three straight years of passing the century mark.

For his career, Price has run for 3,429 yards.

WL head coach Brad Bland has been on staff since Price was in junior high. He’s seen big games and big runs from Red over the years and he says his guy is special.

“He’s a special type of talent you don’t often see in a small school,” says Bland. “He’s exciting to watch — he can break a long run, but he’s also not afraid to mix it up in the middle of the field.”

The Bears will need another big night from Price Friday when they face Bogue Chitto in a huge Region 7-2A game for both teams.

The Bobcats have won two in a row in the series including a 44-36 track-meet of a game last season at West Lincoln.

Two-interception night earns Davis DPOW

Last year when Wesson coach Jeremy Loy was talking about his team prior to the season, he’d stress how young the Cobras were as a whole. We’re a team with a lot of freshmen, Loy would say. We think they can play, but they’re still freshmen.

Loy was spot on about his team as those freshmen have now grown into sophomore playmakers across the board.

Sophomore defensive back Chris Davis is one of those guys Loy was talking about and Friday night against Amite County he was a man on fire.

Davis picked off a pair of passes and returned one for a score. For his efforts, Davis has been named The Daily Leader Defensive Player of the Week.

With wins of 52-0 over West Lincoln, 49-0 at Bogue Chitto and 39-0 against Amite County, the Cobra defense has not given up a single point in Region 7-2A play thus far in 2020.

The snakes swarm to the ball and play with intensity and physicality on defense.

There are vocal leaders and then there are guys who talk with their play — Davis is of the latter variety.

“He doesn’t say a whole lot,” says Loy. “When it’s time to play though he’s a baller.”

As good as he was defensively Friday night against the Trojans, Davis was just as effective on the offensive side.

He caught eight passes for 152 yards and three scores.

Last season as a freshman, Davis was a Daily Leader All-Area selection as a defensive back. He snagged two interceptions, recovered two fumbles and caused one while making 69 tackles.

Wesson has two regular season games remaining — both at home — as they take on Loyd Star Friday and Enterprise the following week.
