Soccer enters final 2 weeks of regular season

Playoff time is quickly approaching for local high school soccer teams as region standings will be sorted out of the final two weeks of the regular season.
Here’s a look at how teams in the area faired in Thursday night action.
Loyd Star, Wesson
In Region 7-1A/2A/3A, it was Wesson winning twice on their home turf at Stone Stadium. In the girls’ game, the Lady Cobras were 3-1 winners over the Lady Hornets of Loyd Star and coach Dale Brister.
The boys’ match saw Wesson and coach Bobo Douglas get a 2-1 win over the Hornets.
The Wesson Lady Cobras (15-6) got two goals from freshman Marley Channell and one from senior Amya Williams. Senior Arie Douglas had two assists for the Lady Cobras and fellow senior Natalie Bonds chipped in one assist.
Junior goal keeper Chloe McManus had 10 saves.
Loyd Star (7-6-1) got a goal from senior Morgyn Brister.
The two schools will meet again on Jan. 23 at Loyd Star in their regular season finale. Wesson is second in the division behind Franklin County (14-4) who beat them 2-0 on Dec. 19.
Franklin County has had four seniors — Promise Warren, Kylie Robinson, Elise Mullins and Ana Hutto — sign with the Copiah-Lincoln soccer program.
Wesson travels to Franklin County Thursday.
The Lady Hornets (7-6-1) host Franklin County on Tuesday of next week and West Lincoln on Thursday.
The Wesson boys got a goal each from seniors Aaron Mooney and Ty Brewer in their win. Mooney also assisted on a goal. Senior goal keeper Zach Franklin had nine saves.
The Cobras (10-5-3) currently sit in third behind West Lincoln (6-1) and Franklin County (5-1) in the region standings with a 4-2 division record.
Loyd Star (4-7-1) got their lone goal from Payne Walker.
Bogue Chitto, Lawrence County
4A Lawrence County swept a pair of matches from Bogue Chitto Tuesday night.
The Lady Cougars (4-8) were 3-1 winners over the Lady Bobcats (5-10). BC and coach Shane Nippe got a goal from Kylie Windmiller in the loss. Loyd Star alum John Floyd is in his first year coaching the Lady Cougars.
The BC boys lost 3-2 and got a pair of goals from Enrique Hernandez. The Bobcats (9-5-1) play at West Lincoln and Wesson next week and then host Hazlehurst on Thursday.
Lawrence County (4-8) and coach Justin Daley are at North Pike next week and host McComb.
West Lincoln
The West Lincoln boys continued to be the hottest team in the area with a 2-1 win over Hazlehurst Tuesday night. The Bears are 6-1 in division play with a 1-0 loss to Wesson as their only blemish under first year coach Jeremy Johnson.
On Dec. 20, WL beat Franklin County 2-0 behind a pair of Jacob Thornhill goals. Franklin County (11-3-4) goal keeper Colby Guice is also a Co-Lins soccer signee.
WL got a goal each from Jacob and Joshua Thornhill in their win over Hazlehurst. West Lincoln has a huge matchup at Franklin County looming in their regular season finale on Jan. 20.
The Lady Bears (4-12) picked up a blowout 7-0 win over Hazlehurst. Sophomore Camryn Summerall led the offensive attack with three goals in the win.
Freshman Brooklyn Griffin also had a hat-trick of three goals for WL and fellow freshman Cara Jarancik added a goal.
Former Franklin County and Co-Lin soccer player Dane Hodges was recently hired to lead the West Lincoln girls.
