Outreach to give turkey dinners

Registration is underway for families who need ingredients for Thanksgiving dinner.
Brookhaven Outreach Ministries wants to provide a frozen turkey for families along with bags of groceries to complete the meal and then some, said Executive Director Jerry Durr.
It’s a program that’s been going on for three decades.
The food giveaway is Nov. 26 but families must register by Nov. 19 to participate. Individuals must apply for the giveaway at the Outreach Ministries Distribution Center at 216 West Court Street by providing proof of household income, the number of people in the household and their ages. The ministry is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. for preregistration. Nov. 19 is the last day to pick up tickets for the giveaway, he said.
The meal will include traditional Thanksgiving items as well as some extra staples to be used for other meals.
“We try to supply our local community with food so that no one does without,” he said.
Durr said October, November and December are the busiest months for the ministry.
More than 280 families participated in the annual Operation Blessing this year, which provides those in need with blankets, coasts, hygiene supplies and food, he said.
