Voters go to polls Tuesday to decide several races

Voters Tuesday will head to the polls beginning at 7 a.m. to cast ballots in state, district and county elections.
But those who need to vote absentee have until noon Saturday to go to the Lincoln County Circuit Clerk’s office to let their voices be heard in the general election. Those who may vote absentee are individuals who will be out of the county Tuesday for any reason, have physical limitations, are the parent, spouse or dependent of someone who is hospitalized outside the county more than 50 miles away, are 65 or older or will be at work during the times the polls are open.
About 800 people voted absentee and affidavit in the primaries. Lincoln Circuit Clerk Dustin Bairfield said 10,646 ballots total were cast in August. That’s 51 percent of the 20,852 registers voters. With the governor’s race on the ballot, it’s likely there will be a larger turnout Tuesday than for the primaries.
Several incumbent candidates will see their names on the ballots, though they face no opposition — Bairfield, coroner Clay McMorris, county surveyor Joe Byrd, District 3 Supervisor Nolan Williamson, District 5 Supervisor Doug Falvey and District 92 State Representative Becky Currie (Lincoln, Lawrence and Copiah counties).
The following races were settled during the primary election:
• State Senate District 39 — incumbent Republican Sally Doty
• Chancery Clerk — Republican Alisha McGehee
• District 4 Supervisor — incumbent Republican Eddie Brown
• Constable Post 1 — incumbent Republican Kelly Porter
• Justice Court Judge post 1 — Republican Ian Smith
• Sheriff —incumbent Republican Steve Rushing
• Tax assessor/collector: incumbent Republican Blake Pickering
