Mississippi historian David Sansing dies at age 86

(AP) — The University of Mississippi says historian David Sansing has died at age 86.

A news release says Sansing, a professor emeritus, fell Friday at his home in Oxford and died Saturday at a hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.

A memorial service is set for 4 p.m. Wednesday at Paris-Yates Chapel at Ole Miss.

Sansing served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War before earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Mississippi College and his doctorate from the University of Southern Mississippi.

He started teaching at Ole Miss in 1970 and was teacher of the year in 1990.

He wrote dozens of scholarly papers and several books, including one called “Mississippi Governors: Soldiers, Statesmen, Scholars and Scoundrels.”

His 2013 textbook, “A Place Called Mississippi,” is still used in high schools.
