The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Lady Wolves started off the 2019 campaign in the best way possible Saturday as the team grabbed two victories over Spoon River Community College (IL), 6-3, and Hinds Community College, 6-0.
The Lady Wolves are back in action on Friday as Co-Lin hosts Holmes in Wesson. First pitch of game one is slated for 3 p.m.
The Lady Wolves got things started early on Saturday as three doubles from Katelyn Hayman, Hannah Walls, and Delaine McMillan in the top of the first inning gave Co-Lin a 2-0 lead over the Lady Snappers of Spoon River. Sophomore Tori Pettit added another run later in the inning as towering single to center field scored McMillan to stretch the lead to 3-0.
In the third, Pettit drove in another run as she grounded out to first. The ground out scored Walls who led off the third with a single.
An error and a double from Spoon River put two runs on the board for the Lady Snappers in the bottom of the third, and another error in the bottom of the fourth plated yet another run. The tough streak for the Lady Wolves cut their lead down to just one, 4-3, going into the top of the fifth.
Harmoni Ashley grounded into a fielder’s choice midway through the fifth to plate Walls, who drew a walk earlier in the frame. McMillian scored on a wild pitch in the ensuing at-bat to put Co-Lin on top 6-3.
Kaytlon Ward entered the game for the Lady Wolves in the sixth and shut down the Lady Snappers offensive production as Co-Lin cruised to the 6-3 win.
McMillan led the team at the plate with three hits, two doubles, five total bases, and two RBIs. Walls finished the game with three runs scored and two hits. In the circle, Mackenzie Gros got the start and the win. The sophomore threw 5.0 innings, gave up five hits, three runs, zero earned runs, one walk, and struck out five. Ward earned the save after striking out two without surrendering a hit in the final two innings.
In the second game of the day, Co-Lin gave up just four hits and no runs to the Hinds Lady Eagles.
In the top of third, a pitch hit McMillan and Ashley followed with a hard-hit ground ball up the middle for a single. A throwing error later in the inning brought the two runners home to put Co-Lin on the board, 2-0.
The rest of the Lady Wolves’ runs came in the top half of the fifth after another error plated Hayman. Haymon led off the inning with a line drive single. A fielder’s choice on a ground ball from Pettit plated Walls, and Julie Scheuermann followed with an RBI single that scored Ashley. Later in the inning, April Lynn singled up the middle to score Pettit and stretch Co-Lin’s lead to 6-0.
Walls and Hayman led Co-Lin at the dish with two hits each. Lynn, Ashley, Sheuermann, and Pettit all finished game two with one RBI each. Ashley led the team in runs scored with two.
Ward controlled the game from the circle as she racked up eight strikeouts after giving up just four hits and no runs. The win moves Ward to 1-0 on the year.
