Mrs. Black, 94, died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2018, surrounded by family and friends who were singing her favorite hymn. She was born Nov. 11, 1923, in Parish, Alabama, to James D. Underwood and Rose Ella Underwood. She graduated from Parish High School and worked as a dental assistant and then went to work for J.C. Penney Co. where she met her future husband. The Penney company did not allow coworkers to date, but the attraction was too strong and they skirted the system by arranging friend double dates in order to spend time together. Eager to be married, but determined to be older than 18 when they said their vows, just two days after her 19th birthday she married AG Black who was by then a World War II gunnery instructor for the U.S. Army Air Corps. They traveled the states together during his service and then continued as he went where the J.C. Penney Co. asked. Their love story was one to emulate and Rosalind was a loving and devoted wife to AG Black for 75 years until his death this past December.
She loved her job as a homemaker and sewed almost everything her girls wore. She taught not only her daughters, but their children and grandchildren how to bake and they all relish the time they had learning her secrets and making gingerbread men. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church and the Junior Auxiliary, when she wasn’t baking something for the church sale or a Brookhaven coffee, she played in several bridge clubs and enjoyed spending time with the JC Penney regional management couples. With her husband, she raised two beautiful daughters Patricia and Becky Black of whom she was immensely proud.
She is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Mary; brother, James W. Underwood; and daughter, Becky Black Morgan.
Survivors are her brother, Charles Underwood; daughter, Patricia Black Allen and husband, Robert O. Allen; son-in-law, Randy Morgan; grandchildren Julie Allen Foncea and husband, Pablo, Will Allen and wife, Jenny, David Morgan and wife, Amanda, Michelle Morgan Staub and husband, Aaron, Philip Morgan and wife, Alli; great-grandchildren, Jacob Foncea and wife, Clayton, Janie Foncea, Sam Allen, Lucy Allen, Brent Staub, Kayla Grace Staub, Hailey Staub and Everett Morgan.
