McDaniel campaign calls on Trump to oppose Hyde-Smith in open letter
Published 10:00 am Wednesday, March 21, 2018
Not all the Republicans in Mississippi are excited about today’s appointment to the U.S. Senate.
While Brookhaven city workers are out sprucing up flowerbeds and sweeping the lots in preparation for the noon ceremony that will see state agriculture commissioner Cindy Hyde-Smith elevated to Washington, D.C., supporters of state Sen. Chris McDaniel are calling on President Donald Trump to oppose her.
“Our concern is that you are not being well served by the political advice you may be getting from leadership in Congress,” McDaniel’s bunch said in an open letter sent out early Wednesday morning. “We don’t want what happened in Alabama or Pennsylvania-18 to happen here in Mississippi. Both of those races were disastrous for the Republican Party.”
The letter does not actually ask for Trump’s endorsement of McDaniel, though he will be an in-party opponent for Hyde-Smith during this November’s special election to fill the Senate seat that will be left vacant by U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran’s retirement effective April 1. Gov. Phil Bryant will appoint Hyde-Smith to serve in the interim at an announcement at noon today at the old train depot in Brookhaven.
The McDaniel group’s request is a tall order for the President — Hyde-Smith helped advise Trump on agriculture issues during his presidential campaign.
The letter goes on to accuse Hyde-Smith of being a party jumper — she served in the state senate as a Democrat — before ending in the familiar appeal to “Make America Great Again.” It is signed by numerous county-level Republican leaders across the state, none from Lincoln County.
The letter, which appears in full below, claims to be paid for by “Friends of Chris McDaniel.”
Open Letter to President Donald J. Trump
Dear Mr. President,
We are urgently writing to you about the newly open United States Senate seat in Mississippi. As you know, our senior Senator Thad Cochran has announced that he will retire as of April 1st, triggering a special election in November.
Our concern is that you are not being well-served by the political advice you may be getting from leadership in Congress.
We do not want what happened in Alabama or Pennsylvania-18 to happen here in Mississippi.
Both of those races were disastrous for the Republican Party.
Tomorrow, in Mississippi, Governor Phil Bryant intends to nominate Ag Commissioner Cindy Hyde-Smith. We, the undersigned, oppose this nomination and urge you not to lend your endorsement to her campaign.
Her only experience as a legislator was as a Democrat. She changed her party affiliation because she would not have won a statewide race as a Democrat.
She is very unlikely to make the run-off in November, which is why we are writing to you, asking that you not lend your name to a candidate that is likely to lose.
Thank you for considering our request. We are all supporting you and your agenda to Make America Great Again!
Below are the Republican leaders who have signed the letter to the President. Please sign here to add your name to the petition!
