A 25-yard fumble return touchdown by Jason Edwards would stake the Wesson Cobras (4-7) to an early 7-0 lead over the Jefferson Davis County Jaguars (10-1) on Friday night. The Jaguars, one of the top 3A teams in the state, would respond with seven unanswered scores on their way to a 47-7 win in Bassfield.
Jefferson County led 20-7 at halftime.
A move up to 3A a few seasons ago was a challenge for the Cobras that the school’s athletic teams have slowly become acclimated to. A move out of their old region this season with area foes like Jefferson County and Franklin County and into a region with 3A powers such as Jefferson Davis and Seminary further amped up the competition for the gridiron Cobras.
Wesson head coach Jeremy Loy is not one to back down from a fight and expects his team to begin training for next season on Monday.
“We’ll miss our eight seniors. They left a legacy of hard work and handling themselves with class,” said Loy.
