HATTIESBURG (AP) — The former home of Oseola McCarty, a benefactor for the University of Southern Mississippi, is set to be relocated and turned into a museum.

Hattiesburg Convention Commission Executive Director Rick Taylor tells The Hattiesburg American that when the house was placed in a recent tax sale, the commission decided to preserve the property and McCarty’s legacy.

Details like cost, location and a time frame for the project are still being worked out.

McCarty, a former washerwoman, revealed in 1995 that after her death she would leave a portion of her life’s savings for scholarships. Those savings, which totaled about $150,000, were donated to USM after McCarty died from liver cancer in 1999.
