MERIDIAN ­— The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Wolves won their second straight MACJC South Division matchup with a 73-68 victory over Meridian Community College on the road.

The win comes on the heels of Co-Lin’s victory over rival Southwest earlier this week.

After jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the first two minutes of action Co-Lin’s offensive stalled. The sudden inability to makes shots allowed the Eagles to quickly pull away to an 11-point lead with 10:06 remaining in the first half of play. Entering the locker room the Wolves trailed by nine and were shooting just 37 percent from the field.

The Wolves came out red hot in the second half as they drove to the basket more often and took more mid-range shots rather than three-pointers. The strategy worked as the Wolves slowly chipped away at Meridian’s lead.

With 9:57 remaining to play the Wolves took their first lead since the opening minutes. Co-Lin did not let up and continued to extend their lead until the final buzzer. The offensive performance in the second half was a stark contrast from the first as the Wolves shot an impressive 63 percent from the floor.

Lamarcus Lee, Jonathan “Biscuit” Floyd, and Anthony Jones led with Wolves with 15 points each. Lee hauled in five rebounds, Floyd had three, and Anthony had three. Youry White added another nine points and Trae Thompson netted eight.

DJ Mitchell led the Eagles with 19 points followed by Timothy Patton who added 13 points. Mike Woodard rounded out Meridian’s leading scorers with 10 points.

Co-Lin shot 49 percent (28-for-57) from the field, 25 percent (3-for-12) from three-point range, and 50 percent (14-of-28) from the free throw line. The Wolves brought down 40 rebounds. Meridian shot 38 percent (24-for-64) from the field, 19 percent (5-for-27) from three-point range, and 71 percent (5-for-21) from the foul line. The Eagles posted 40 rebounds.

Lady Wolves 76, Meridian 70

The Lady Wolvescontinued their winning streak Thursday night after defeating the Lady Eagles of Meridian Community College 76-70. The win moved Co-Lin to 13-1 overall and 6-0 in the MACJC South Division.

The win was also head coach Gwyn Young’s 900th career win. 2017 is Young’s 40th season as head coach.

The Lady Wolves are back in action Monda as Pearl River travels to Wesson. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.

“It was a good win for us on the road,” said Young. “We made plays when we really needed to. We have to do a little better defensively for sure, but I’m proud of this win.”

Co-Lin struggled early in the contest as the Lady Wolves could not find the basket often. The slow offense was mutual between the teams as Meridian also had a difficult getting shots to fall. The result was a low scoring, back and forth, first half that saw eight lead changes, and had the Lady Eagles leading 30-29.

The Lady Wolves returned to their normal ways in the third quarter as they finally pulled away from Meridian with open looks and created from strong ball movement. A 15-5 run in the middle of the third quarter gave Co-Lin a 10-point lead.

In the fourth, Meridian continued to battle back narrowing the Lady Wolves lead to just two on multiple occasions. Tenazhia Hinkson made some key baskets in the final minutes of play gave the Lady Wolves breathing room to secure the win.

Hinkson led the Wolves in the scoring column with 22 points. Both Diamond Smith and Debraia Bell finished night with double-doubles. Smith posted 14 points and 10 rebounds while Bell netted 10 points and brought down 10 rebounds. Brittany Rose rounded out the Lady Wolves top performers with 14 points and seven assists.

Mary Maxwell led Meridian with 18 points, and Kashari Gordon added 14 points. Takerri Cooks netted 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Co-Lin shot 43 percent (25-for-58) from the field, 25 percent (5-for-20) from three-point range, and 70 percent (21-of-30) from the free throw line. The Lady Wolves brought down 37 rebounds. Meridian shot 36 percent (21-for-58) from the field, 33 percent (5-for-15) from three-point range, and 77 percent (23-for-30) from the foul line. The Lady Eagles posted 24 rebounds.

Co-Lin will face a tough challenge Monday night as they take on Pearl River at home. Pearl River stands at 8-5 overall on the season and 1-5 in the south division.
