The Wesson Cobras dropped a high-scoring contest Tuesday night to Wilkinson County by a final score of 84-74. The loss drops Wesson to 10-9 overall.
“This was a tough loss for us. We didn’t defend well at all and Wilkinson made us pay for that. I thought my guys showed a lot of heart late in the game by cutting into their big lead. We are just too inconsistent right now,” Wesson coach Rusty Newman said. “We played well one half and bad the next. We have got to learn to put two good halves together if we want to be successful. We will keep working and trying to get better.”
The Cobras trailed the Wildcats 46-28 going into the half, but came to life in the fourth quarter by scoring 31 points to cut into the lead. The game ended with the Cobras trailing by 10 points and the Wildcats securing the win.
Wilkinson County guard Ja’Quorias Stewart was the top scorer for Wilkinson County with 25 points. Senior forward Kelandrix Lushaw followed up with 18 points.
Sophomore forward Jontavius Smith was the top scorer for Wesson with 22 points and he was also the top rebounder with nine for the game. Freshman forward Kenner Bizot was the second leading scorer with 16 points and sophomore guard JD Allen had 15 points as well.

“We started out sluggish and did not rebound the ball well but we made some adjustments in the second half,” Wesson head coach Candice McDuffey said. “We played a lot better in the end, but we missed too many lay-ups and free throws. I was proud of the girls’ effort they displayed in the second half.”
The Lady Wildcats dominated the game early, taking a 31-19 lead going into halftime. The Lady Cobras did come back and outscored the Lady Wildcats in the third quarter, but the game ended with Wilkinson County on top.
