More than two years after Brookhavenites rubbed elbows with the likes of John Krasinski, Margo Martindale and Anna Kendrick, the movie shot in Lincoln County has finally made its Los Angeles and New York premieres.

“The Hollars” hit screens Friday on the East and West coasts, but when will it make its way south to Brookhaven?

Producer Tom Rice says probably next month.

“Sony hasn’t released their roll out schedule just yet, but we’ve made sure Brookhaven is on their radar, and if all goes well, it should be in the theater there sometime in the second half of September,” he said.

“We had such a lovely time filming in Brookhaven.  Everyone in the cast and crew were constantly talking about how the people of Brookhaven were so kind and supportive.”

The movie, Krasinski stars in and directs, is about a dysfunctional family dealing with a terminally ill mother.

Rolling Stone magazine gave it three out of four stars, saying Krasinski “pulls it off with uncommon humor and compassion.”

Krasinski plays the main character John, a graphic novelist living in Manhattan with his pregnant girlfriend (Kendrick) who is a pet-clothing designer.

The movie also stars Sharlito Copely as older brother Ron, and Richard Jenkins as dad, Don.

Because mom Sally is in the hospital, viewers will see a lot of King’s Daughters Medical Center, which is Knight County Hospital in the film.

“The majority of the hospital scenes were shot at KDMC on the third floor in what is now The Willing Hearts Endoscopy Suites,” said hospital spokesman David Culpepper. “We were told by the production crew that three of the hardest places to shoot a movie are in a functioning airport, prison and hospital. We at KDMC took every precaution to secure patient information and continued to provide great patient care during the filming process.”

The movie includes several shots of the hospital lobby, the operating room and a hospital room.

One scene viewers may find confusing is when the main characters are walking through the hospital and they pass through a glass corridor. The scene in the corridor was actually shot at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson and cut into the footage where they are at KDMC, he said.

Culpepper said working with the filmmakers was a pleasant experience. “The crew respected what we do day in and day out and we likewise respected their objectives,” he said. “As a bonus, the film has several hospital employees that have appearances. I have seen the movie at its preview earlier this year and cannot wait for it to debut in Brookhaven. This movie will make you laugh and cry.”

Culpepper said Lincoln Countians will recognize several locations in the film, including Janie’s Pastry in downtown Brookhaven.

“I can’t wait for it to come out,” said owner Janie Stogner.

She missed the showing at an indi-film festival in Jackson earlier this year, but people who saw it have told her the movie is great.

Some have visited the bakery to see it for themselves.

“We had a lady from Madison come all the way down to buy chocolate chip cookies,” she said.

A couple from Illinois who had been following the movie stopped by the store after hours but Stogner was still there. They asked if she’d open long enough for them to peek inside.

Stogner graciously obliged.

“They were on vacation and wanted to see where the movie was shot,” she said.

Sen. Sally Doty was an extra in the movie. She’s getting off an elevator at the hospital as Krasinski’s and Kendrick’s characters are getting on.

She missed the premiere in Jackson so she doesn’t know if her scene made it.

“I’m crossing my fingers that I made the cut,” she said.

Though it’s a short scene with no speaking on her part, it still took a while to film. They shot it 15 times, she said.

Staying quiet proved to be impossible for the Brookhaven woman. “I wasn’t supposed to say anything,” she explained. “But after the sixth or seventh time when I was getting off, and John Krasinski was getting on, he bumped me and I said ‘Excuse me.’ Someone yelled, ‘Cut! Cut!’”

She plans to buy tickets as soon as it comes to Brookhaven. “I can’t wait to see it,” she said. “I hope it does well. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Krasinski explained the appeal of making the movie to Matt Lauer during an appearance on “The Today Show” earlier this week.

“These movies, I think, are the type of movies that I used to love that are not being made anymore and I just headlong fell in love with it,” he said.

Having “The Hollars” filmed in Brookhaven was good news for the city, said Garrick Combs, executive director of the Brookhaven-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce.

“Film activity in Brookhaven provides a great way to boost economic impact—from hotel rooms to food and other areas of our economy.  But also it is a great sense of community pride in seeing our city on the big screen,” he said.
