Sims pitches Braves to victory

PEARL — Lucas Sims tossed six shutout innings, surrendering just one hit, to lead the Mississippi Braves to a 6-1 victory over the Birmingham Barons Friday night at Trustmark Park. With the win, the Braves also captured the series. Mississippi (54-49, 20-14) scored six runs on seven hits.
Birmingham (43-61, 14-20) scored just one run on two hits. Sims (3-3) walked one and struck out seven to pick up the victory. Caleb Dirks, AJ Minter and David Peterson worked the final three frames, respectively, to close out the contest.
The Braves took a 3-0 lead in the second. Dustin Peterson singled and scored on a Carlos Franco triple to right field. A strikeout-wild pitch then allowed Franco to score on a close play at the plate.
Jacob Schrader reached first that that play and a single from Joey Meneses put runners at the corners with no outs. Willians Astudillo followed with a sacrifice fly to center, plating Schrader.
In the bottom of the fifth, Astudillo singled and took second on an errant throw by the shortstop. He advanced to third on a Johan Camargo sacrifice and scored on a wayward pickoff attempt. OzzieAlbies walked, swiped second and then scored on a Dansby Swanson base hit, extending the Braves lead to 5-0.
Birmingham scored its lone run in the seventh when Joey DeMichele tripled and scored on a wild pitch from Caleb Dirks.
Mississippi added another run in the eighth to make it 6-1. Peterson singled to right before Franco delivered a RBI-double to left field for the game’s final run.
Tyler Barnette (1-4) worked five frames, giving up five runs (three earned runs) on five hits and a walk. He struck out three.
