Let there be light in downtown Brookhaven

Downtown Brookhaven is getting brighter by the day (or night really), thanks to the efforts of the Brookhaven Trust, volunteers and downtown businesses.

The idea is simple: line the tops and sides of buildings with lights to create a safer, brighter and more appealing atmosphere downtown.

The project began with the Chamber’s building and has grown from there. Brookhaven Trust President Jason Snider said it has taken a lot of work and a lot of cooperation from various groups and business owners to make this project a reality.

“There has been a lot of volunteer efforts provided into getting this completed,” Snider said. “We wanted to ensure that the lights are classy and will last for years to come.”

Snider said the block around Janie’s Pastry Shop is complete, and the block around The Inez should be completed soon. Cherokee Street and South Railroad Avenue businesses are on board with the project, as are the businesses on our street.

Snider said the group has been working on the project since late December. Snider has been recruiting businesses to participate in the lighting effort, which isn’t cheap. LED lights are being installed because they are efficient, but they are expensive.

We’re grateful to the Trust, Snider, volunteers and especially the businesses that see value in the project. This effort will be another feather in Brookhaven’s cap.
