MERIDIAN — Chris Smith, a standout Mississippi State wide receiver from 2009-12, was shot and killed in his hometown of Meridian on Friday. He was 26.

“We are shocked and saddened by the tragic passing of Chris,” said MSU head coach Dan Mullen.

“Our entire Mississippi State family mourns his loss. Chris was an important part of our first recruiting class and helped set the foundation for our success. He was a terrific teammate and his work ethic was impeccable. He earned his way onto the field as a true freshmen in 2009 and later received his degree from Mississippi State. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of his family and friends.”

MSU football alumni and current Detroit Lions defensive back Darius Slay was one of many current and former Bulldogs to take to Twitter to offer their condolences.

“R.I.P  Chris Smith. One of the hardest workers I’ve ever played with.  Prayers for your kids and family,” Slay said.

Smith played in 48 games from 2009-12, recording 109 catches for 1,180 yards and five touchdowns. His 109 receptions rank 10th in MSU career history.

As a junior in 2011, he led the Bulldogs with 35 catches for 330 yards and two scores. He followed that up with 47 catches for 564 yards and two touchdowns as a senior.

He was a member of three State bowl squads, including the victorious 2011 Gator Bowl and 2011 Music City Bowl teams.

As a three-star recruit, Smith signed with the Bulldogs after a stellar prep career at Meridian High School highlighted by a 2008 Class 5A state championship.

According to WTOK in Meridian, little is known of the details surrounding the shooting as police continue their search for a suspect.
The incident occurred around 10:45 p.m. Friday.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
