A three-car accident Friday afternoon on I-55 at the Wesson exit resulted in the death of one person.
The Wesson Volunteer Fire Department responded to a call of a vehicle fire with possible entrapment at 11:12 a.m. Friday. Wesson Volunteer Fire Chief Frank Newell said upon arriving at the scene, the fire department extinguished the car fire and found a body.
Mississippi Highway Patrol Troop C Public Affairs Officer Eric Henry said a Honda Civic traveling south struck a Buick Lesabre also traveling south. After the initial impact, the third vehicle, a white Cadillac, hit the Buick, he said. The Buick then burst into flames.
Henry said witnesses attempted to rescue the driver, Joyce Fortenberry Williams, from the Buick but could not get to the her. Williams died on the scene, he said.
The Honda ran off the road and the driver was transported to King’s Daughters Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, Henry said. The driver of the Cadillac was not injured, he said.
The accident is still under investigation.
