WESSON – The Wesson Lady Cobras fastpitch softball team will begin the 2016 season Saturday, when they travel to Walthall County to play in Salem’s Classic.

Head coach Michelle Nunnery will start her second season at the helm and is expecting to have a great season.

“This year we have a handful of players that are strong in several positions,” said Nunnery. “I plan to use the classic and jamboree games to play with the defensive options that I have. In the end, it will probably come down to whoever is doing their job at the plate for us offensively.”

“In the years past, we have struggled some with our bat, but now the project that Coach Jackie Johnson started, with many years of fundraising, is finally complete,” said Nunnery. The project she is referring to is the recently completed batting cage.

“The batting cage will give us the opportunity to get more cuts in during practice, which in return should boost our averages,” said Nunnery. “All in all, I am very excited to see how this season will play out. We’ll just take it one game at a time and make adjustments whenever we need to.”

Nunnery is a 2004 Parklane Academy graduate and a 2009 Mississippi College graduate. She played basketball and softball at Mississippi College.

The Lady Cobras will have six returning starters to provide leadership and guidance – Cheyenne Gladden, Harmoni Ashley, Brooke Jones, Amber Brinson, Catherine Wilson and Shelbi Maxwell.

Gladden and Kaitlyn Smith are the only seniors on the team.

“We have several returning starters back,” stated Nunnery. “Our new younger players are pushing our older players this year. Which in return, helps keep everyone on their toes and work harder.”

Wesson lost one starter to graduation last year – Kayla Britt.

The Lady Cobras will look to improve on an 11-11 record last year. They finished with a 6-0 record last year in district play.

Nunnery’s assistant coaches are Dale Lowery and Michelle Berch.

The Lady Cobras’ first home game will be against the Florence Lady Eagles Feb. 29. The junior varsity game will precede the varsity game, starting at 5 p.m.
