Charges against a Union Church man accused of sexual battery have been dismissed because prosecutors couldn’t locate a witness in the case, court records show.

Clifton Alexander Glass, 4612 Old 20 Road, Union Church, was arrested Dec. 31, 2014, on sexual battery charges. Glass was indicted on two charges of sexual battery on March 24. The indictment alleged both counts as involving a female child who was at least 14 but under 16 years of age while Glass was more than 36 months older. Glass was listed as 20 years old, but his indictment describes him as being at least 21.

The order to dismiss the charges states that the “state cannot meet its burden of proof in this a circumstantial case.” The order was signed Feb. 4.

Fred Hill III, a 24-year-old charged with first-degree murder, is scheduled for trial this week in Lincoln County Circuit Court.

Hill, of 1515 Spur Lane, was indicted Sept. 11 on a first-degree murder charge. Hill was also indicted for allegedly shooting into a dwelling, possession of a firearm by a felon and having a cellphone in jail.

Lincoln County Sheriff Steve Rushing said the April 2 fatal shooting likely stemmed from a dispute between Hill and the victim. The vitim was found dead at the scene on Spur Lane when the sheriff’s department and ambulance arrived.

Hill remains in the Lincoln County Jail.

Chance Nicholas Smith, 22, is also set for trial this week. Smith, of 1311 Adolf Lane, was arrested Jan. 23, 2015, for aggravated assault on law enforcement and resisting arrest. Smith was indicted March 24 for the offense of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. His indictment says on or about July 11, 2014, Smith feloniously and purposely or knowingly attempt to cause bodily harm to an officer of the Brookhaven Police Department, Marzell Brooks, by shooting at him.

Smith is serving a 20-year sentence for manslaughter for a Forrest County crime. He was transferred from the Mississippi Department of Corrections to the Lincoln County Jail to prepare for his trial in Lincoln County.

Lindsey Grace Mulligan, 28, is scheduled for trial this week. The former deputy clerk in the office of the Lincoln County Tax Assessor/Collector was indicted for allegedly embezzling at least $16,000 in taxpayer money.

A grand jury indicted Mulligan, of 961 Old Rifle Range Road, Petal, on July 15 for embezzling approximately $16,215.12 during her employment in the tax office from April 21, 2009 to Nov. 9, 2009. Mulligan was arrested on July 18. She was released later that day and is out on $20,000 bond. Embezzlement by a public employee is not subject to a statute of limitations and carries penalties up to 10 years in prison and fines up to $25,000.

Moncherik Hooks, 27, is scheduled for trial this week. Hooks was indicted July 15 on a charge of touching, handling, etc. a child for lustful purposes. Hooks was released April 22 on a $25,000 bond.
