A 3-year-old child is dead and a woman is battling life-threatening injuries after the car they were traveling in collided with a school bus in Lawrence County on Monday.
Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Brandon Fortenberry said Yoshuan Herrera, of Monticello, died overnight Monday at the University of Mississippi Medical Center following the wreck. MHP was dispatched to the scene at 3:28 p.m.
Fortenberry said a 1997 Toyota passenger car driven by Alma Gomez, 33, of Monticello, was traveling south on Hwy. 27 when it lost control and struck the school bus, driven by Eloise Ladd, 49, of Monticello, near Renfroe Road. The car came into contact with the bus on the front right side of the car and then left the road, striking two trees before coming to rest. Fortenberry said the bus came to rest in the northbound lane upon impact.
Both Herrera and Gomez were transported to Lawrence County Hospital before being taken to UMMC, where Gomez is still fighting life-threatening injuries.
None of the 26 children on the bus were injured, Fortenberry said, though there were some complaints of pain. All were taken to Lawrence County Hospital to be checked out.
No cause of the accident has been determined and it is still under investigation.
