The Lincoln County School District Board of Trustees approved a bid by Oddee Smith Construction Monday night as improvement and expansion efforts across the district continue.

Construction on a new parking area at Enterprise Attendance Center will begin soon after the approval of a $300,026.98 bid by Oddee Smith. LCSD Superintendent Terry Brister said the company will be able to begin construction as soon as the board approves the bid, weather permitting.

Brister also discussed the bigger picture with construction across the district. He said the district is finishing up the Enterprise cafeteria and finalizing the Loyd Star dressing rooms in preparation for basketball season. He also said they are looking into upgrading the lighting at Loyd Star.

“Everything looks like athletics right now, but we had to do that before we could do academics,” he said.

Brister said that many of the campuses are boxed in by athletic fields. They have a long-term vision of adding classroom buildings throughout the district, but they would prefer to keep classrooms in the same area. So first the district has had to move fields further out. Next, the goal would be to add classroom buildings where the old fields are.

“It may not be the best vision, but there is a vision,” he said. “Everyone wants something, but you get what you need.”

In other board business:

• The board approved Bogue Chitto’s request to hold its annual fireworks show at halftime of the 2015 homecoming game on Oct. 2. Since the county is currently under a burn ban, the board said the approval was contingent upon the recommendation of Lincoln County Civil Defense Director Clifford Galey.

• The board approved amended contracts of teachers to reflect new AA certification.

• The board approved a family medical leave request.

• The board approved the purchased of a single source item from My Reading Coach.

• The board approved the request from Loyd Star to collect money from students for athletic shoes.

The next school board meeting will be held Oct. 5 at 5 p.m.
