An 18-year-old Brookhaven man is in jail and another is in the hospital following a Wednesday night shooting that police think might be drug-related.
Odarius Black, 12-25-96, of 523 Turner St., has been charged with aggravated assault and armed robbery after he shot and wounded Jeffrey Paxton, 12-28-79, of 2792 James Drive.
Police Chief Bobby Bell said the station received a call at 9:49 p.m. from King’s Daughters Medical Center that someone came in who had been shot. Paxton is still at King’s Daughters Medical Center but will be OK, Bell said Thursday morning.
When officers spoke with Paxton he said he was attacked on Fulton Street, and then named Black as the shooter. Paxton said Black pulled a gun on him and discharged it, barely missing his head and hitting him in the right shoulder.
Officers coaxed Black out of his home about an hour and a half later, Bell said, and he surrendered.
Bell said the department thinks the incident was drug-related.
“We’re still looking into, investigating the whole situation,” Bell said. “[But] we’re sure we have the perpetrator in custody.”
Bell said Black has been has been in the youth court system before.
