Q: Is there an update on the Military Memorial Museum’s push to get the F-86 Sabre Jet in Hazlehurst relocated to Brookhaven?
A: In 2013 representatives from the Military Memorial Museum in Brookhaven started a project to get the F-86 Sabre Jet located in Hazlehurst and can be seen from Highway 51 relocated to Brookhaven as part of the museum.
“Government regulations is what held it up,” Roffie Burt, a volunteer at the museum on South Whitworth Street in Brookhaven, said about the project.
Vice Chairman of the Military Memorial Museum Randall Smith said they are working on acquisition of the aircraft with the Wright-Patterson Airport Base in Ohio.
“It’s still an ongoing project, and we still hope to get it,” Smith said. He said they’ve faced a lot of red tape over the almost year and a half since the effort began.
Burt said some of the things asked of the museum included being open for at least 35 hours a week and staffing a full-time employee. He said that these requests are hard to address because the museum is run entirely by volunteer power.
Despite these and other obstacles facing the museum, Smith said they are continuing to work on getting the jet moved to Brookhaven and are waiting to get the go ahead for completing the project.
