Lodging tax check doubles

The city of Brookhaven’s second check illustrating the town’s profit from the lodging tax sports a more than 100 percent increase from the first check.

Delivered by the state’s Department of Finance and Administration, the most recent check was for $13,351.46, up $7,947 from the first check of $5,404.46.

According to information from the deputy city clerk, Marsha Fairman, the tax’s real title is the Hotel, Motel and Bed and Breakfast Tax and adds a two percent tax to the price of hotels, motels or any such entity that houses six or more guests.

In charge of the keeping and handling the money received from such checks is the Brookhaven Tourism Council, which has four core members who will always come from the positions of mayor, Chamber of Commerce executive director, Brookhaven Parks and Recreation director and a city alderman. As of now, those positions have been filled with their corresponding persons – respectively, Joe Cox, Garrick Combs, Terry Reed and David Phillips.

The remaining five spaces on the council are filled with representatives from the Hotel/Motel industry and area retail operations representatives, all nominated by the four core members. These positions were filled by: Neal Patel and Johnny Lynch from the hotel/motel industry, Katie Nations of J. Allen’s, Brenda Henderson of Trustmark and Angie Warren of Expectations. Samantha Melancon serves as the council’s secretary and treasurer and Joe Fernald serves as the council’s attorney.

Ward 6 Alderman David Phillips said their next meeting is Wednesday.

“We’ve got a lot of things to do, and we’re very excited about it,” Phillips said.

In past interviews, Mayor Joe Cox said the tourism council will put together a budget for the use of the money around June and July as they get a feel for the amount of money they’d be receiving. From there he said they will do that they were commissioned to do which is it promote the city of Brookhaven.
