To celebrate being the named the Healthiest Home Town in Mississippi, the entire city is invited to a downtown jamboree Tuesday morning. The festivities include music, dancing and the presentation of the $50,000 check to the City of Brookhaven from Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation.

“As part of winning the award, every city is required to have a presentation,” said Healthy Hometown Committee Leader and Alderman at Large Karen Sullivan. She said that the 23 member healthy hometown committee brainstormed many ideas and came up with the down town celebration.

The event will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the Mayor’s March from the courthouse parking lot to Brookhaven High School led by the BHS Band. The Jimmy Furlow Senior Center, Camellia Line Dancers and KDMC Fitness Center Good Times Line Dancers will perform in the school’s auditorium, followed by Curves of Brookhaven Zumba Dancers and the BHS cheerleaders. The musical guests include members of the BHS choir and dancers. The finale will be the official presentation of the Healthy Hometown Award.

“It is my hope that the community will show up in big numbers to celebrate this honor and to help us show our appreciation to Blue Cross Blue Shield,” said Healthy Hometown Committee leader and Alderman at Large Karen Sullivan. She said it is really important for the community to show up to the event because it is an honor to be receiving the award.

Sullivan said Brookhaven is the first city of its size to win the overall title of Healthiest Hometown.

Brookhaven was chosen back in July as the Healthiest Hometown in Mississippi for the city’s efforts to better the overall health of the community. From farmers markets to the smoke-free ordinance, community leaders, educators and residents have been working diligently to improve the Home Seekers Paradise.

This is the second year in the row for Brookhaven to be recognized by Blue Cross & Blue Shield. Last year the city won $25,000 which is being used to build a walking trail in Bicentennial Park.

The event Tuesday will honor all the hard work and effort that has been put in to making Brookhaven the best it can be.

“It’s going to be a fun day,” said Sullivan. She added that she is very excited to see the public show up to cheer on Brookhaven’s continued success with health initiatives.
