Congressional candidate Douglas MacArthur “Doug” Magee made a stop in Brookhaven Wednesday afternoon on his campaign running as a Democrat in the June 3 primary for the Third Congressional District.

“There is something wrong with this system,” said Magee, who lives in Mendenhall and was born in Magee. “These people are destroying the middle class. If I had one regret, it would be that I haven’t spoken out until now.”

Magee is running because of his dissatisfaction with the incumbent congressman, Rep. Greg Harper, R-Miss. Magee said he thinks Harper is a Tea Party Republican who is not representing the interest of the people in the Third District and that he is controlled by the Koch brothers and other special interest groups who have tread on the constitutional rights of people in the district.

“The working man can’t make it anymore,” said Magee. “I will work to improve the quality of life for all members of our district.”

Magee received his undergraduate degree in English from the University of Southern Mississippi. He continued his education at the University of Mississippi Law School and George Washington University School of Law. He has been working as a trial lawyer since 1969 and is a retired colonel in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps.

“I am an honest and ethical lawyer and have been preparing for 50 years to serve the people in the Third District,” said Magee.

Magee said he believes in rebuilding infrastructure in America, taking power away from the Tea Party and bringing as much government money as he can to his district. He is adamant about First Amendment rights, veteran’s benefits, social security benefits, a fair minimum wage, affordable health care, equal pay for equal work and the right of women to make their own health care decisions.

“The constitution and what it stands for is deep in my blood,” said Magee. “I am prepared to get off the plane and immediately start working for my district. We’ve got to change in order to survive.”

Magee will continue campaigning across the district until the primary election June 3. He will be running on the Democratic ballot against Jim Lijeberg and Dennis C. Quinn. Running on the Republican primary ballot are Hardy Caraway and Harper.
