Co-Lin conquers Delgado

COVINGTON, La. – Claresa Banks scored 13 points and Ashley Minor had 11 in leading the Copiah-Lincoln Community College Lady Wolves to a 68-41 Saturday trouncing of the Delgado (La.) Lady Dolphins.

In the men’s game, a 18-point performance by Co-Lin’s Michael Vardaman ended a long losing streak at Delgado gymnasium since the last time the Wolves claim a victory in 2008. The Wolfpack clipped the Dolphins 57-54 in overtime.

Co-Lin won’t play again until Jan. 7, when they host the Baton Rouge Bears in a doubleheader at Mullen’s Gymnasium.

The Lady Wolves (5-4)  had a strong defensive effort in the first half to lead 34-17 at halftime and outscored the Lady Dolphins 34-24 in the second half.

“In the first half, the girls played hard defensively,” said Co-Lin women’s coach Gwyn Young. “Our effort and hustle was good overall. This was a good road win for us to head into the holiday break. Overall, I was pleased with our intensity.”

Caroline Lumpkin directed the Lady Wolves on the boards with five rebounds. The Lady Wolves out-rebounded Delgado 21-18.

Delgado got 13 points from Nya Duhe. Gabriell Delaune contributed 12 points.

The Wolves (3-6)  played a strong first half and commanded a 25-16 lead at halftime.

In the second, the Dolphins rallied to outscored Co-Lin 33-24 to force overtime.

In the overtime, the Wolves rose to the challenge and went on an 8-5 run to secure the win.

“This was a good win for us,” said Co-Lin men’s coach Kenny Bizot. “The guys played hard and did the things needed to get the victory. Overall, It was a great team effort from everyone.”

Jordan Lumpkins managed to put Co-Lin ahead 56-54 in overtime with a lay-up and Chris Steverson nailed one-of-two from the free-throw line secure the win.

Lumpkins was the leader on the boards for the Wolfpack with nine rebounds

The Dolphins has three players scoring in double figures. Mikal Mazik paced the charge with 12 points. Reginald Pitts and Ralston Morris provided 10 points apiece.
