A large crowd filled the brand new Enterprise gymnasium Tuesday night as the visiting Natchez Cathedral Green Wave and home-standing Enterprise Yellow Jackets tangled on the hardwood.
The girls’ game provided a thriller as the Lady Green Wave upset Enterprise 45-44. In the boys’ contest, Enterprise cruised to a 59-43 victory.
Enterprise returns to action Thursday night as they travel to Stringer to meet the Red Devils for three games. The junior varsity girls tip off at 5 p.m. followed by a varsity girls and boys game.
Cathedral 45, Enterprise 44
The girls’ game started off sluggishly for both teams as Cathedral carried a 5-4 advantage after one quarter. The second quarter belonged to the Enterprise Lady Jackets as they secured a 21-14 halftime lead.
The Lady Jackets (2-3) came out strong to start the third quarter on an 11-0 run to grab a 33-14 lead before Cathedral went on a 29-10 run of their own to tie the game at 43 with less than 10 seconds remaining in regulation.
With four seconds left, Cathedral fouled Lady Jacket freshman guard Alissa Barlow. Barlow connected on one of two free throws to give Enterprise a 44-43 advantage.
After the successful free throw, Cathedral immediately threw the ball inbounds and shot a three pointer that missed. Cathedral, however, had a player in the right spot at the right time to grab the rebound and put it back up as the buzzer sounded, giving the Green Wave the 45-44 win.
Enterprise was led in scoring by Hannah Kirtfield and Alissa Barlow. Each scored 11 points in the loss.
Cathedral was led by Elizabeth Smith’s game-high 16 points.
