Thursday evening, in the city’s newest downtown events center, “The Crossing,” at 107 S. Railroad Ave., a place where history crosses paths with current events, a feast of southern tastes will garnish newly refurbished dining halls for the year’s biggest fundraiser for The Brookhaven Trust – a group that supports the preservation of local history, culture and the arts.

The event, “A Taste of the Trust,” runs from 5:30 p.m. until they announce the People’s Choice Award for best dish at 9 p.m.

“This is a new location for us,” Anna Smith, president of the Trust, said about The Crossing. “I think we will be the second event held at the center. It’s a beautiful place – we’re really excited about it.”

Smith said there are many old favorites returning to A Taste of the Trust again this year.

“This is one of my favorite things that Brookhaven does each year,” Smith said. “We have 20 vendors – restaurants – that will be dishing up signature dishes. Dixie Springs Café will be there again this year, Poppa’s Fish, Joan’s catering and many other local favorites. There will be a silent auction that will include a lot of art and a variety of home furnishings.”

The Brookhaven band Tyler Bridge and Friends will play a range of party music, Smith said.

Smith said the Trust has already raised $7,500 and is hoping to reach the organization’s goal of $12,500 with Thursday night’s event. She said all proceeds this year will benefit businesses downtown interested in historic revitalization.

“We donate money to the little theater, the arts council and other local projects,” Smith said. “And this year the money will go towards a downtown revitalization project for businesses. We really want this year’s project to be something to make a positive visual impact on downtown.”

Smith said the Brookhaven Trust is open to suggestions from citizens on historical projects to be undertaken by the trust.
